Skype

Skype works.

  • - Skype and their owner Ebay as of this writing show no intention to publish or allow for a true open source skype client
  • - Skype client for linux is not available for x86_64 (a.k.a. AMD64 in Ubuntu) architecture
  • - Installation is very manual and command line driven

Because there is no build for a x86_64 skype client as of today, the 32 bit client need to be installed despite non matching architecture, and a number of libraries being installed manually.

Download the Ubuntu package from [1] (When I installed it, the version was 2.0.0.63-1) Download a number of Ubuntu 32 bit packages (libdbus-1.3, libqt4-core, libqt4-gui, libsigc++-2.0, libXss) Extract the downloaded *.deb files for the Ubuntu libraries Copy the necessary library files from the extracted packages to /lib32

3G modem and T-Mobile UK laptop internet

It works. Some restrictions.

It requires commandline action.

configuration

My Dell Latitude D630 laptop features as an built to order option an internal 3G modem.

I use a T-Mobile UK sim card with a laptop internet contract (1 GB and 20 GBP per month).

The usb subsystem reports a device on location 2:4 on the bus to be from Dell Computer Corp. (vendor id 0x413c), and product Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem (product id 0x8137).

The modem reports to be an Expedite EU870D MiniCard, version 10.9.00.0-00 from Novatel Wireless Incorporated.

The Novatel web site listed this device to be a HSDPA 3G modem with a maximum 3.6 megabit per second download capacity, and a 384 kilobit per second upload capacity. The web site mentions this device to be upgradeable to 7.2 megabit per second download capacity, though I would not know how this would work.

To get both the modem and the internet connection working, I had to do some pretty technical steps.

Currently I still use a manual configuration of the usbserial driver.

K Menu -> Internet -> KPPP -> Configure...

  • Accounts -> New
    • name -> new name for the connection
    • telephone number -> *99***1#
  • Modems -> New
    • Device tab -> Port -> /dev/ttyUSB0
    • Modem properties tab -> Modem Commands -> Init String 2 -> AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","general.t-mobile.uk"

Wireless LAN

Kubuntu 7.10 supports the wireless LAN adapter based on the Intel 4965AGN chipset out of the box. During installation the user is not challenged with anything related to Wireless LAN support. Once the KDE desktop environment has started, the user can use the K Network Manager icon in the systray to select a network, which is when he may be challenged to enter credentials to authenticate for network access.

  • - By default K Network Manager uses the KDE Wallet function, which when used requires to enter the wallet password each time you want to connect wireless. You have to find the configuration and change it to use local unencrypted storage.
  • - The dialog to enter the credentials looks quite technical, more technical and less helpful for the novice user.
  • - The tooltip for the systray icon shows wlan0, and not simply 'Wireless Network Adapter' or something else less technical.
